Archival Update: Yaplog

Japanese blogging platform Yaplog will be closing in January of 2020. In preparation for this, we have archived some of the Japanese Fashion company blogs hosted on Yaplogs.

Archives of select blogs will be made available here. Please note that we are prioritizing capturing data over uploading it, as both take time and bandwidth. We will upload some as we continue to capture blogs, but the majority will not be available until early 2020. Just zipping some of the larger blogs can take hours. This is a major WIP. Most data is not yet available.

There were two methods used to archive blogs. Initially, we used httrack, which downloaded every file related to the blog and saved everything in the original file structure. This did not work for some of the largest blogs. There are multiple ways to browse these, since the monthly and other indexes were recorded. However, the easiest way to browse is to go to the archive folder which has each post as it’s own html file that you can open in your web browser. Here is how to get there for https://yaplog.jp/ap-kyoto/

1. Unzip the archive
2. Open the yaplog.jp folder
3. Open the folder with the blog name, in this case, it’s ap-kyoto
4. Open the archive folder
5. The lowest number post (frequently 1.html) is the oldest post that was still live on the blog, and the highest number is the newest post. In this case it’s 555.html.

We switched near the end to using a custom PHP script. Blogs downloaded using the PHP script were downloaded in a much more pared down format. We saved all the posts (as far as we know) as html, and we saved the photos in the posts. We captured some, but not all, of the other graphics. So things like decorative emoji, decorative animated gifs, background images, etc, which were purely decorative have been skipped in some cases to speed up the archival process.

All active blogs will have their final posts captured using the PHP method.
